INDEPENDENT SPENT FUEL STORAGE

Location

Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey

Owner

PSEG Nuclear, LLC

This project consisted of the construction of a new nuclear spent fuel storage facility, support facilities, and expansion of the Protected Area for Salem Units 1 & 2 and Hope Creek Unit 1.

Highlights of the project included:

  • Installation of approximately 1,400 "Soilcrete" columns, 3' x 15' and up to 50' in depth; more than 11,000 tons of cement/slag was used
  • Installation of three spent fuel cask pads approximately 3' x 90' x 260' in size and incorporating 7,800 CY of concrete; the area above the Soilcrete columns was filled with three feet of compacted engineered fill with geogrid material prior to the slab construction and the pads featured integral electrical and control conduit systems for thermal monitoring capability
  • Construction of a fabrication area for staging and placing concrete in the storage container casks; the Heavy Haul Path required for a crawler to move the casks from the plant and storage pad, including soil stabilization, underground utility protection, roadway improvements, turning pads, and support systems; and a new access roadway roughly one mile long, including all site improvements, soil stabilization, drainage, paving, guide rails, signage, and more
  • Installation of a new 100’x 60’ foundation for equipment and storage of the casks
  • Expansion of the existing Protected Area around the spent fuel storage facility and associated Security systems including CCTV cameras, infrared, perifield, high mast lighting, fencing, vehicle barriers, and more
