The project consisted of fast-tracked security upgrades required by the NRC at the Salem/Hope Creek Nuclear Plants, including:

  • Installation of a 1.6 mile concrete vehicle barrier, 3.5’ high by 10’ wide; more than a mile was cast in place, with removable precast concrete blocks used for the remainder
  • Installation of nine new ballistic-resistant guard towers as well as the relocation of the towers
  • Excavation for 10,000 feet of razor security fence, including underground conduits and wiring necessary to install the associated intruder-detection systems, microwaves, cameras and more
  • Installation of security fence, gates, operators, and electronics; roof-top defensive guard positions and concealment walls on several plant buildings; numerous structural steel screens, security cages, CCTV cameras, and other impairments; new active vehicle barrier systems; a new vehicle pre-screening area; and new site lighting
  • Demolition of 11 existing buildings
  • Entombment of multiple doorways on the interior of the turbine buildings and the exterior of others
  • Re-construction of the entrance and exit roads with new guide rail and signage
  • Installation of a new rifle and pistol range with a 40-foot tower and automated target system

The critical path work was completed on schedule, in less than three months, primarily within the plant's "Protected Area".
